Its so fun and expressive, and every character is instantly recognizable from their silhouette alone. The great Yoshihiko Umakoshi, best know for Heartcatch Precure and My hero academia, designed the characters and overall look of the show. Igarashi creates some of the most impressive layouts of any toei production, with such inventive and impressive shots and editing that establishes mood, and he makes it look easy. The series was taken over by Takuya Igarashi, another Ikuhara alumni, who helmed shows like star driver, bungo stray dogs, and Ashita no Nadja, even a few episodes of Utena. Season 1 series director is Junichi Sato, who came from sailor moon and later directed the masterpiece Princess tutu. Everyone feels like their on the same page, all working to create something great.

A mix of old veterans and young ambitious talent that help create a balance, lifting it’s a modest budget with passion. The series has no shortage of legendary staff. It’s a delightful little magical girl anime that has a lot more going on then you see on from the basic premise. The girls go on various adventures in the witch world, and help out friends and class mates with a little bit of magic. Majorika ropes the girls into being her witch apprentices, and working at her store so they can turn her back to human form. Its about a self described world’s unluckiest pretty girl Doremi and her friends Hazuki, a soft spoken girl who struggles with speaking her mind, Aiko, a brash girl from osaka who is sometimes a little too honest, accidentally reveal the shop owner Majorika’s identity as a witch, turning her into a magic frog. These past few months I’ve been watching through all of Ojamajo Doremi, a magical girl series from 1999-2004.
